I was in Lagos state recently, and visited the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). LAWMA provides professional, efficient and sustainable waste management and disposal service to the generality of Lagosians, corporate bodies as well as local and state governments. In a few days, I would be sharing with you a lot more about what LAWMA is doing to save the Lagos environment and ultimately the planet.
But here is a bit of it.
- By Dec 2011, green energy(electricity) generated by methane gas captured from refuse is expected to be provided to pilot spots by LAWMA.
- LAWMA recycles pure water sachets to new products.
LAWMA’s efforts to reduce waste and helping a warming climate has not left the women folk behind the scenes.I noticed that a considerable number of the staff are women. Not just as staff, but participating staff. Women from different class, age and qualification.
Here are pictures of some women making a living from the opportunity created by LAWMA’s vision of managing waste and reducing emission.
Mrs Titi Dada is a Truck Driver.
Ms Faith Owosho also drives a truck.
Engr Abiola Kosegbe designed the LAWMA Transfer Loading Station.
Mrs Moji Adeleye is the Healthcare Facility Manager.
Mrs Tolu Adegbiti manages the Plastic bag recycling plant
Mrs Folashade Kadiri heads the Press and Public Relations Unit
